Imagine your family moving to an entirely different country and trying to open a restaurant that offers food never before experienced by the surrounding culture. That’s exactly what the Kadam family faces in this delightful film from Lasse Hallström.

Based on the beloved novel by Richard C. Morais, The Hundred-FootJourney follows the Kadam family, famous restaurateurs who are forced to move to France to try and restart life after a tragic event. Papa (Om Puri) finds a building and land for sale that he envisions as his family’s new restaurant. Problem is the property is located right across the street from a renowned French restaurant that is owned by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). Mallory – of course – does not like the fact that this new restaurant is moving in and tries everything in her power to stop it from happening.

The entire Kadam family can cook well, but, Hassan (Manish Dayal) is the obvious star. Hassan makes the acquaintance of the French restaurant’s smart and witty sous chef, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), when she helped his family after their car broke down. That soon turns into a love interest between the two, which creates an even more intriguing, underlying storyline.

Madame Mallory later asks Hassan to join her team after he cooks her an omelet with his own spin that she, simply, cannot resist. He accepts her offer and takes on the challenge of earning the restaurant its second Michelin star. With both restaurants doing well, the stubborn Papa and Madame Mallory realize there is a lot more to this than just outdoing the other.

This is a heartwarming film that brings a little bit of everything for the viewing audience to enjoy. It’s a delight every bite you take (see what I did there).
