Christmas Tunes Part I

Christmas week is upon us, so it’s time for a new Christmas tune everyday leading up to Christmas Day! The first tune is from a group that made the finals of “America’s Got Talent” this year.

Sons of Serendip is comprised of four friends – lead singer Micah Christian, Cordaro Rodriguez, Kendall Ramseur and Mason Morton. It’s worth noting that Rodriguez and Ramseur are from Charlotte, N.C. The group’s members met while attending graduate school at Boston University and decided to audition for “America’s Got Talent.” Sons of Serendip made a lasting impression on the show, even being named “the most musically talented act on the show” by judges Howie Mandel and Howard Stern.

The band is truly one of the most unique I’ve seen in quite some time. Sons of Serendip consists of only a harp, cellist, pianist and vocalist. The instrumentals, harmonies and sheer performance quality of this group are just incredible. This made for lasting memories of performances on the show for viewers – myself included.

Sons of Serendip held a Q&A on Facebook a couple days ago and I asked the group’s members about their musical inspirations. Christian responded, “It’s hard to pinpoint the influences as a group, but we do listen to a ton of film scorers like John Debney and Hans Zimmer, as well as artists like Coldplay and One Republic. As a vocalist, my personal influences are India Arie and Amos Lee.” That’s a quality I really look for in artists: a background that incorporates all types of musical influences. That’s a unique quality possessed by Sons of Serendip as the group can take any song and turn it into a beautiful masterpiece.
Just like this classic Christmas song, “O Holy Night.” Have a listen in the video below! Also, check out Sons of Serendip’s PledgeMusic page, which was created in an effort to raise funds for the creation of a brand new EP. The band reached its goal but you can still contribute to get your own copy of the EP. Sons of Serendip says it will donate 5 percent of any money raised after reaching the goal to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Stay tuned to Reflections for more great Christmas tunes!
