For this week’s “New Music Monday” I’m stoked to feature R5.
Who’s R5, you might ask? Being, arguably, the foremost up-and-coming band in the industry right now, R5 is quickly gaining a ton of mainstream radio play as well as an ever-growing fan base.
The band is comprised of four siblings – Ross, Riker, Rocky and Rydel Lynch – and their friend, Ellington Ratliff. According to a bio of R5 on MTV, the Lynch siblings put on shows for family and friends back in their home state of Colorado, which bolstered their love for music. Later on, the family moved out to Los Angeles, Calif. so the siblings could begin to pursue acting ventures. Riker became a frequent guest star on “Glee” and Ross was tapped to star as Austin Moon in the Disney Channel series “Austin & Ally” – both of which ended up being excellent sources of publicity for the band.
In 2012, R5 announced that it had signed a recording deal with Hollywood Records and, in 2013, the band produced its debut EP, Loud, which received positive reviews from fans and critics alike. According to Tommy2.net, the EP charted near the top of the iTunes charts within 24 hours of its release. In August 2013, the lead single “Pass Me By” off of R5’s full length debut, premiered on Radio Disney to much acclaim. The band’s full length project, Louder, was released in September 2013 and quickly made its way to the No. 2 spot on the iTunes charts. R5 embarked on its first tour in February 2014, hitting numerous cities in Europe. The band has also performed at the White House Easter Egg Roll, the Radio Disney Music Awards and the Wango Tango Music Festival.
R5 is set to release its sophomore album – Sometime Last Night – on Friday and just began a headlining tour in support of the project – which will make a stop at Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh on Saturday. Sometime Last Night is sounding really good so far. R5 does an incredible job of blending both pop and rock aspects in its music and, although the band’s fan base has been primarily teens, there is a clear crossover to a more adult musical taste with this latest project. R5 is constantly growing as a band and I can’t wait to see what else is in store.
Have a listen to the band’s performance of “F.E.E.L.G.O.O.D.” on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” – a new track off of the forthcoming album that I’ve been jamming to a lot lately – and be sure to get the album when it’s released on Friday!
