Next up on my list of films to review is one that I’ve been waiting for a while to see: Peter Cornwell’s Mercy.
Based on the Stephen King short story “Gramma,” the film centers on a single mom, Rebecca (Frances O’Connor) and her two sons, George and Buddy (Chandler Riggs and Joel Courtney). They are tasked with being the caretakers of their ailing mother/grandmother, Mercy (Shirley Knight). George is clearly attached to his grandmother but hasn’t seen her since her health first began to decline. What he finds when he sees her in her current state is shocking. Mercy has had a stroke and can barely do anything. She’s an adult sized infant. Through their time in taking care of Mercy in her home, Rebecca and her sons discover a disturbing secret about Mercy that puts all of their lives in danger.
Okay, I’ll go ahead and say it: I’ve never been that much of a fan of horror films. That being said, I thought Mercy was pretty good overall. Especially the second half when the focus is on George and Mercy, for the most part. I felt that most of the scares from this horror flick were somewhat predictable. The acting was good – especially from Knight, Riggs and Courtney. Although it had some flaws, I’d recommend seeing Mercy. You should be able to find it on Netflix, iTunes or other outlets.
I Give It A: B-
