“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
– Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This is my favorite quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., bar none and it’s incredibly pertinent to today’s times. It’s a true shame that hatred, bigotry and racism still exist in our country today. There is still much darkness out there. From mass murders, to terrorist attacks, to bonafide hatred for fellow humans. Hatred and bigotry have even spilled out into our political landscape. I’m sure you know what I mean.
Hatred comes in all forms, but it seems to be running rampant recently. Heck, I’ve had to report several people on social media over the years for using racially insensitive words while commenting on posts. Thankfully, I didn’t know any of these people personally.
I just don’t get it. How can you have hatred for anyone? Sure, you may dislike something that a person does. But how can some people hate others without even knowing them or getting to know them? I’ll never understand it.
My prayer is, if you’re reading this and happen to hold hatred towards another person in your heart, that you will make it your mission to work through your hatred and turn it into compassion. After all, as Dr. King so eloquently said, only light and love can drive out darkness and hate.
