NMM: Lecrae

This week’s artist is one of the most talented in the industry today.

Lecrae has had a whirlwind of a past two years. His album Anomaly (2014) debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart as well as several other charts. According to his bio, Lecrae is the first artist in Billboard history to have a No. 1 album on both the Gospel Albums and 200 Album Charts at the same time. The success is nothing new for the two-time Grammy Award winner, but Anonmaly crossed over from the traditional Christian/Gospel charts to the Billboard 200 that spans several genres. This is, undoubtedly, a huge achievement.

It’s been a long road to the pinnacle of artistry for Lecrae. According to Today’s Christian Music, he was raised by his mother and they moved around quite a bit, with Dallas, San Diego and Denver all being home at some point. Along with that came an everso tempting life on the streets. It was there that Lecrae found his passion in rap and, according to TCM, he was 19 when he gave his life to Christ. A few years – and many successes and struggles later- Lecrae founded Reach Records and released his first album at age 25, according to TCM. Fast forward to 2016, fresh off the massive success of Anomaly, Lecrae has churned out yet another masterpiece in Church Clothes 3. The 10-track project features tunes that address a wide array of topics from social change, to success and critics. I’ve really started to love Lecrae, his message and sheer artistic ability. In addition to the new album, Lecrae is set to release the much anticipated book Unashamed, a story about his journey in this life. I’ve already pre-ordered it and can’t wait to read it.

Lecrae is quite simply one of the rare gems you’ll find in a crowded music industry. If you’re not listening to this guy by now you should definitely get on it. We’re truly blessed to have him share his talents with us.

Lend an ear to one of the tunes – my personal favorite – off of Church Clothes 3 and be sure to get the album on iTunes, Amazon and Google Play.
