Okay, this review is going to be short and sweet as I dive deeper into the story of The 5th Wave which, frankly, isn’t that deep to begin with.
The film – based on the first novel in a popular series of the same name – centers on Cassie (Chloe Grace Moretz), a high schooler just living the everyday life. But when waves of deadly alien attacks strike Earth, her life gets turned upside down. Now on her own, Cassie goes on a mission to save her younger brother.
See? I told you it wasn’t that deep. While The 5th Wave has its fair share of action it also has a bleak plot. I’ll give Moretz as well as The Kings of Summer‘s Nick Robinson and The Grand Budapest Hotel‘s Tony Revolori props for giving this clunker of a film some life. Otherwise, The 5th Wave was predictable and I actually got a bit bored while watching it. There is a “twist” in the film but it was pretty lame. I waited to see The 5th Wave until it began showing at a local theater that costs about $2/ticket – and I’m glad I did. I’m not saying don’t go see it at all but don’t pay full price. You’ll be disappointed.
I Give It A: D+
