My Review: Moonlight

I’ve been wanting to see this film and I finally got the chance to.

Winner of three Oscars including Best Picture, Moonlight is a coming of age story. The Barry Jenkins film chronicles Chiron, a young black man, from childhood to adulthood as he discovers himself and finds his place in the world. In the film, we follow Chiron on his journey in three stages of life as he struggles with being bullied, living in a less than ideal situation at home in Miami, finding love and a sense of belonging.

Despite the mishap at the Oscars, I can clearly see why Moonlight took home Best Picture. It’s not just another coming of age film. The way it’s told is unique. The technical aspects, specifically, camera work places the audience right in the middle of the action. The story itself is raw, heartbreaking at times and the ending brings it all full circle. It grabs your attention right from the start and doesn’t let go until the end credits. Moonlight is a masterpiece and will be remembered for decades to come.

I Give It An: A+
