1. Bad Move, CMT

I don’t watch CMT that often. However, a new show premiered on the network that got me pretty interested. The show is Sun Records and it’s based on the famous “Million Dollar Quartet” story of Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash who just happened to meet up at the Sun Records Studio and record together.

The show had a short, eight-episode season which wrapped up a couple weeks ago. The finale left many open storylines and fans began to wonder if another season was forthcoming. It doesn’t look that way. When asked, CMT programming chief, Jayson Dinsmore, said in an article on Deadline that Sun Records was initially meant to run as a three-night event but it transformed into a limited series and, despite it doing well in the ratings, there are no plans for additional episodes.

The interest I had turned into a love, of sorts, for the show. It’s incredibly unfortunate that CMT appears to not be bringing it back. I say “appears” because word that the network isn’t ordering more episodes has created a firestorm on social media. Fans even started a petition online to bring the show back, which has garnered about 2,000 signatures. I’m right with them! In fact, I not only signed the petition but I also emailed CMT and its parent company, Viacom, as well as sent letters to both. Sun Records not only provided entertainment. It provided a historical look into an incredible time in the music industry. The show also featured a cast as talented as no other on television at this time. And I’m not just talking about acting. I’m talking about musically as well. Plus, many of the cast members have interacted with fans on social media which means even more to me. Needless to say, CMT has lost this viewer.

2. 13 Reasons Why Gets a Season Two

One of my new favorite shows that did get a season two is 13 Reasons Why! The Netflix series focuses on Hannah Baker, a high school student who takes her own life due to a perfect storm of events. Before doing so, she makes a series of tapes detailing the reasons why she did what she did. It’s a gripping show but also dark and not necessarily for the faint of heart. It’s a show that this world needs, believe it or not, because it addresses some key issues in our society today such as bullying, among others. I’m stoked that it’ll be back for a second season!

3. It’s Baaaacccckkkk!

After all the rumors, it’s now officially official: American Idol is coming back!  The singing competition show is heading back to television after getting the axe by FOX. The reboot will air on ABC – with execs saying it will be bigger and better than FOX’s version, according to Entertainment Weekly. As an Idol super fan, I can’t even begin to describe how excited I am!

Idol is slated to premiere on ABC in 2018. 

4. Hudson and Clarkson to The Voice

Speaking of Idol, NBC’s The Voice had some news of its own.  Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson, will join fellow alum, Jennifer Hudson, as judges, according to multiple reports. This comes just days after the Idol reboot news and I couldn’t be more disappointed. My disdain for The Voice is well known – and has grown even more after this move that, more or less, quelled the exciting Idol reboot news. But that’s not where my disappointment ends. It includes Clarkson and Hudson as well. Sure, they can do what they want. But turning their backs on the very show that gave them their start in the industry to join its competitor is not cool, in my opinion. To each their own, I guess.

5. A Twitter Record

If you’ve been on Twitter lately, you may have seen talk about a guy named Carter Wilkerson. He sent out a Tweet to Wendy’s asking how many retweets he’d need to get for a year’s worth of chicken nuggets. Wendy’s challenged him by saying 18 million. Wilkerson’s tweet didn’t quite make that number, but it did break the record for most retweets at about 3.5 million, according to NPR. In addition, Wilkerson has used his new found fame to create a website and make t-shirts, with proceeds benefiting the Dave Thomas Foundation. How cool is that?!?
