1. Raleigh Supercon
This weekend is Raleigh Supercon and, for the first time ever, I’m going! There’s a particular reason I’m going: I get to meet an actor from one of my favorite new shows! I’m keeping it under wraps, for now, but stay tuned to my Twitter and Instagram this weekend for more as well as right here on the blog for a full recap of my experience!
2. Spidey Crushes The Box Office
Spider-Man: Homecoming shattered box offices on its debut weekend, netting $257 million worldwide with $117 million of that coming from the U.S. That gives the latest Spidey film the third best opening of the year, behind Beauty and the Beast and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2. I saw the film and really liked it. Homecoming had a great storyline and Tom Holland was exceptional as Spider-Man. Stay tuned for my review of the film soon!
3. Congrats, Brent!
Rays prospect – and current Durham Bulls pitcher – Brent Honeywell played in the All-Star Futures Game on Sunday night, tallying two scoreless innings, striking out four to lead Team USA to a 7-6 victory over Team World. Brent’s performance earned himself MVP honors for the game – becoming the first pitcher to be named MVP in the game’s 18-year history. What’s more? The rookie sensation’s ball cap, worn during the game, is heading to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. as part of him being named the MVP. Way to go, Brent!
4. FOX Getting A New Singing Show?
Reports are circulating that FOX is developing a new singing competition show. The news comes a bit more than a year after the network cancelled American Idol. Accoridng to Daniel Holloway of Variety, the new show is from Israeli producer/distributor Armoza Formats. The premise, accoridng to Holloway, is a spin on the classic singing competition show in which four finalists are selected in the show’s premiere and other contestants are brought in to challenge them. A winner is crowned during the show’s finale.
Frankly, this sounds dumb to me. And it absolutely baffles me why FOX decided to cancel Idol but execs said they were sad to see it on another network and are now developing a new show. Well, FOX execs, you wouldn’t have had this problem if you hadn’t cancelled the show in the first place. I haven’t watched a show on FOX since Idol was cancelled. Whatever this new singing show is, I will not watch it. You couldn’t pay me to watch it, in fact.
5. Modern Art
This is pretty cool! You can text the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and it will text you back a piece of art from its collection. Send Me SFMOMA lets users text “Send Me” and a keyword, including emojis, to 572-51. In return, the bot system will send a photo of a piece of art in the museum’s collection that matches the user’s request as well as the title of the work, artist name and year it was created. Pretty cool, eh?
P.S. I tried Send Me SFMOMA for myself, asking it to send me something industrial. I received a piece of art from Charles Steeler (1927) entitled “Bleeder Stacks, River Rouge Plant, Ford Motor Company.”
