I’m not the biggest fan of superhero films but, for some reason, I’ve always fancied the Spider-Man ones (and Guardians of the Galaxy is pretty good, too). Given my fancying of the Spider-Man franchise, you can probably guess that I saw the latest iteration, Spider-Man: Homecoming. I probably wouldn’t be writing this review, would I? 🙂

Jon Watts’ film follows Peter Parker (Tom Holland) as he tries to balance life as a high schooler and fight crime as Spider-Man. Under the guidance of Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.), Peter tries to establish himself as a worthy hero and to solidify his place as a member of The Avengers. But a new threat emerges that will test his skills and, ultimately, is worthiness to become of the title of an Avenger.

Let me start by saying that Tom Holland was the perfect choice for Spider-Man. The thought kept coming up throughout watching the film that it seemed Holland truly fit the role of Spidey for this film and any other actor would probably not have worked. Holland was a natural in the role and it showed tremendously on screen. Speaking of perfect fits for a role, Jacob Batalon absolutely stole the show as Peter’s best friend, Ned. Particularly in the scenes where Ned finds out that Peter is Spider-Man and thereafter. Third, Zendaya brings a nice amount of wit and sass to the film as Michelle (or M.J., as we find out near the film’s end). In fact, all three play off each other nicely when in scenes together. The film itself has a captivating story for viewers to follow with just the right blend of drama, humor and action (what would a Spider-Man film be without action, right?). In addition, the filming/cinematography/special effects are just astonishing. Most visible in a scene where Spider-Man tries to save people – who turn out to be Peter’s high school classmates – at the Washington Monument. My only knock on the film was it did last a bit long (133 minutes) – perhaps, a tad too long. But, all-in-all, Spider-Man: Homecoming is a definite add to your film viewing list.
