My Friday Five: On SOTU, Wassabi Productions & A Best Picture Challenge Update

1. SOTU

President Trump held his first State of the Union address on Tuesday. I didn’t watch it.

Believe it or not, I did give Trump a chance when he was elected. However, he has not proven to me that he can successfully lead our country. I’ll leave it at that.

I did do something constructive in lieu of watching the SOTU: I posted across social media about registering to vote courtesy of Rock The Vote. My post was generally well-received (despite it earning a “haha” reaction from one “friend” on Facebook) but I just ignored it.

2018 is a big, midterm election year. If you have not registered to vote I highly recommend doing so (check RockTheVote.org for more) But registering is only half of it. Make sure to get out and VOTE as well. Our country needs you!

2. Happy Ann’y, Wassabi Productions

I’d like to wish a BIG Happy 12th Ann’y to Wassabi Productions! I’m a huge fan, watching videos since the channel’s creation. I remember videos such as “Breaking News” with Mike Hawk and Mr. Lemburk, to “You’re So Immature” and more. I also went to high school with Alex. Just last year, I was able to meet Alex and share my appreciation for what he does in person! It was an awesome experience, which you can read more about here.

That brings me to STORY TIME! A few months ago, I was at a local mall that is frequented by Alex and his family when he visits North Carolina. I happened to be wearing my “AW” Lightning Shirt – as a part of Wassabi Productions’ merch line. A cashier at a store I visited noticed it and asked “That’s an Alex Wassabi shirt, right?” Apparently, she was a big fan – a “Wassabian” as the fandom is called. I told her that I was also a fan and even went to high school with Alex. I can’t really describe her reaction with words, so I decided to use this GIF instead…

Anywho, congrats Alex! Here’s to many more years to come!

3. Best Picture Challenge Update

Oscars night will be here before we know it! I’ve always been a film buff and, this year, I’m trying something new (at least for me): I’m viewing all nine of the Best Picture nominees and will post a review of each on my blog! I guess you can call it the #BestPictureChallenge (creative, I know). I saw film number six yesterday – Darkest Hour – so only three to go! Stay tuned for reviews of all the films in the coming weeks.

4. Technician Turns 98

N.C. State’s student-run newspaper, Technician, celebrated its 98th year of publication this week. Technician has brought relevant campus stories, student features, opinion pieces and so much more since its inaugural year in 1920. Congrats to all for keeping it going!

5. Duel at the DBAP

The Durham Bulls announced this week that UNC and N.C. State Baseball will meet in what is being termed the “Duel at the DBAP” on April 17 at 6:30 p.m. According to a release on the event, the two teams will square off at the DBAP for the first time since an 18-inning barnburner at the 2013 ACC Baseball Championship. This will be epic, for sure!
