1. Nike

The first of two appreciation posts goes to Nike. The sportswear brand announced a new “Just Do It” campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick, the NFL quarterback who (wrongly) received much ire for kneeling during the National Anthem in protest of racial discrimination that still exists in our country.

Truth be told, I have applauded Kaepernick for this since day one and find it completely asinine how some demonize him for his actions when some of the very same people don’t stand for the anthem in their homes. The very same people may be among those who walk around on a stadium concourse, eat, or talk during the anthem or believe those who do are perfectly fine. The very same people that probably didn’t say a word when President Trump raised the flag at the White House back to full staff in the middle of the night after the death of John McCain.

Even more asinine is seeing these grandstanding individuals calling for a boycott of Nike and posting videos of themselves destroying Nike merchandise that they have already purchased. If you’re so upset with Nike, why not practice what you preach – honoring our veterans – and donate those Nike items you no longer want to a homeless veteran? Seriously, the petty actions I’ve seen from some that claim to be patriots is truly disgusting. And it is not going to work. I, for one, will continue to proudly support our veterans, Kaepernick, and wear my Nike gear.

2. Kavanaugh Hearings

Another appreciation post to Cory Booker and his fellow Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Appreciation for standing up to the utter nonsense that Republicans are partaking in regarding their quick, sneaky, and slimy “confirmation” of Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court. It has been widely reported that Republicans have withheld a multitude of pertinent documents involving Kavanaugh’s career. Particularly his time in the George W. Bush Administration.

Booker and his colleagues vowed to release certain documents that were reportedly deemed “committee confidential” to the public and followed through with that on Thursday, despite heavy backlash from Republicans and potential consequences that could include expulsion from the Senate. Bravo to these brave individuals for putting country first over party and political careers. Bravo.

3. #ReadABookDay

Thursday was #ReadABookDay which gives me an opportunity to remind you of the Read More Challenge on my blog.

This is where I read a book that is informative & powerful, then share some thoughts on it. I can’t wait for installment three of this series but, in the meantime, be sure to check out the first two posts in this series!

4.  Bulls in the Playoffs

The Durham Bulls began round one of the Governor’s Cup Playoffs on Wednesday against the Toledo Mud Hens. The Bulls lost Game One but held off the Hens in Game Two, setting up at least two more games back home at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, beginning tonight at 7:05 p.m.

5. Ress on USA National Team

My Twitter pal and N.C. State swimmer, Justin Ress, is one of three Wolfpack swimmers announced to the 2018-19 USA National Team. Ress joins fellow senior, Elise Haan, and former Pack swimmer Hannah Moore on the team. Congrats to all!
