My Friday Five: On A Concert Cancellation, A New ‘AGT’ Champ, And Recapping The Bulls Season

1. Thoughts on a Concert Cancellation

Hurricane Florence wreaked havoc throughout North Carolina, from real damage to shifting around countless events. One such event that piqued my curiosity was Niall Horan’s concert at Coastal Federal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek in Raleigh on Monday. Horan announced via social media on September 14 that the show was being cancelled, which really came as no surprise. What is a bit surprising, however, is the show was not rescheduled. In my experience, most shows that are affected by extenuating circumstances are eventually rescheduled. This show? No reschedule whatsoever.

Meanwhile, Horan did follow through with his show in Charlotte without issue, just two days after the Raleigh show was suppose to take place. Despite Charlotte being impacted by the hurricane as well, albeit, probably not as bad as some other areas of the state. Nonetheless, some fans may have had to travel to the show while numerous roads and highways in North Carolina were impassible. Horan reportedly said at his Charlotte show that he would make it up to the fans in Raleigh – some of whom had waited a year or more to see him live – “at some point” but no further comment was made. Nothing has been decided and, based on some previous experiences, probably nothing will ever happen to make it up to Raleigh fans. I hope I’m proven wrong.

I say Horan should come back to Raleigh and hold a benefit concert for Hurricane Florence relief, much like local radio station Pulse FM is doing. That would be a great gesture not only to the fans in Raleigh who missed out on the show – through no fault of their own – but to my fellow North Carolinians as they recover from the storm. I guess only time will tell.

2. AGT Has a New Winner

After months of competition, Season 13 of America’s Got Talent came to a close with incredible magician, Shin Lim, taking the crown! He becomes just the second magician to win the show and truly deserved it as I was amazed by each and every one of his performances. Congrats, Shin!

3. Durham Bulls Season Recap

The Durham Bulls ended another great season, winning its second consecutive Governors’ Cup Championship and berth to the Triple-A National Championship Game. In a rematch against the Memphis Redbirds, it was the Redbirds that took the ultimate crown. That said, it was still an awesome season! Until next year.

4. Wolfpack Games Set for Next Week

Wolfpack Games, the annual event held by N.C. State Swimming and Diving to showcase its team for the new season, is set for Friday, September 28 at 6 p.m. Fans can attend the event at the Casey Aquatic Center on the campus of N.C. State for free. Wolfpack Games always features fun competitions between the swimmers and divers, as well as plenty of activities for fans. This year’s event will also feature a celebration of the 2017-18 National Champion members of the team. This is an event I always love to attend so I can’t wait! More information can be found here.

5. New “I Voted” Sticker for Durham

There’s a new sticker in town. After holding an online contest, the City of Durham announced its brand new “I Voted” sticker design. The design, from Joshua Klein, incorporates the words with the colors of the Durham city flag. A clean and simple design and I really like it.
