I’m so thankful to iTunes for helping me discover Mickey Guyton. The Texas-born singer/songwriter was featured in the country “New and Noteworthy” section this week, having just released her debut EP entitled Unbreakable.
Guyton began singing in church and has many legendary voices she looks up to including: John Denver, Dolly Parton, Whitney Houston and BeBe and CeCe Winans. She made her national television debut on PBS in 2011 performing for President Obama and First Lady Michele Obama at a White House event celebrating country music. Not too bad for your first national television performance, right? Since that performance, Guyton has been hard at work on Unbreakable which has garnered quite the buzz on iTunes since its released last week – receiving a near perfect, five-star rating by listeners. She’s also scheduled to perform at the iTunes Festival at SXSW in Austin, Texas on March 15.
Like I said in the opening, I’m so glad I discovered Mickey Guyton. She has a powerful voice and her songs are just flat out great. Guyton’s approach to her music reminds me a lot of my friends, Tyler Barham and Katie Basden, in that her songs are not saturated with guitars, drums, what have you. They are simple yet powerful with thoughtfully-crafted lyrics.
