It’s crazy to think that the first installment of the Now You See Me franchise (if you want to call it that) premiered three years ago.
The Four Horseman are back in Jon M. Chu’s Now You See Me 2 to pull off another daring heist. They initially set out to expose a tech mogul and his unethical business practices. But, after being kidnapped and threatened by rising tech star Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe) and with the FBI hot on their tracks, the Horsemen are left with no choice but to stage a final act to reveal the mastermind behind everything and clear their names.
I enjoyed NYSM2 overall. I began my review with the “I can’t believe it premiered three years ago” bit because I thought the timeline mentioned in the film was a bit off. NYSM2 presented the idea that only a year had elapsed since the Horsemen’s first act, presumably the first film, when there has been a three-year gap between films. I don’t know, it seemed strange to me. I guess I’m just being picky. Beyond that, it’s a pretty good film, with great performances as usual provided by Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco. I also liked Lizzy Caplan’s performance as Lula, a magic super fan and amateur magician that joins the Horseman. Caplan’s performance definitely stood out among the fellas. Bottom line, Now You See Me 2 is a decent film but it was hard to top the spark of the original. If I had to choose, I’d choose the original any day.
I Give It A: B-
