My Friday Five: On A Merger, Tiger vs. Phil & The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

1. Tuft & Needle Merger

I found this…interesting. Tuft & Needle, the bedding company I’ve talked so positively about on my blog in the past, is merging with Serta Simmons, one of the largest bedding companies in North America. In my opinion, this is a hypocritical move. One of T&N’s chief goals is to provide better service to its customers as opposed to what big name mattress companies, such as the multi-billion dollar Serta Simmons, have apparently provided.

In a statement on Facebook, T&N officials assured customers that they will “keep promises” regarding warranties, quality of products, returns, and service that customers are accustomed to. Officials also promised in the statement that T&N’s headquarters will remain in its current home of Phoenix, A.Z. and the brand will remain independent under the Serta Simmons umbrella.

The move just seems like a complete 180 from what the company has prided itself on for the past six years, in my opinion; but I hope I’m proven wrong. We’ll see.

2. Tiger vs. Phil

The long talked about duel between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson is set. On November 23, the pair of golf legends will duke it out in an 18-hole, matchplay event in Las Vegas with $9 million going to the champion. According to Bob Harig of ESPN, the event will be produced by Turner Sports and will be a pay-per-view telecast.

Wait. What?

You read correctly. Pay-per-view, much like fights are marketed. And in lies my problem with this whole thing. I find it completely ridiculous that this will most likely price out the average fan – like me – from watching the event live and it will cater to the premium viewer who can shell out God knows how much to watch two 40+ year olds play golf. I was so excited about this duel but, given this latest news, I’ll pass.

3. Congrats, Simon Cowell!

Simon Cowell; music mogul, producer, and television competition judge received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this week.  Cowell was surrounded by family and (famous) friends at the event. Of course, it was only fitting that his Walk of Fame induction ceremony would be star-studded as Cowell has had a hand in discovering tons of them.

I will never forget getting to see Cowell in person during a couple tapings of The X-Factor USA in Greensboro several years ago. It was a time in my life I won’t soon forget.

From American Idol, to The X-Factor, to the Got Talent series, and beyond; congrats Simon Cowell!

4. The Big Bang Theory Ending

News broke this week that Season 12 of the monster hit show, The Big Bang Theory, will be its last. It’s hard to believe the series will finally end but what a run it has had. It will be missed.

5. Wyndham Championship Recap

Be sure to check out a recap of my time at this year’s Wyndham Championship in Greensboro. From seeing a musician I’ve been a fan of perform live, to meeting one of the players, I had a great time!
